Confessions of a Cookie Dough Addict

I’m not trying to make a bold statement about our world.  I’m not even trying to make a bold statement about myself.  I’m just a guy who wants to test a theory and is willing to use myself as a guinea pig.  You see, I’ve been doing some research on how addicted we’ve become to processed sugar and foods and I realized that I’m the poster boy for what someone with a sugar dependency looks like.  I’m rather picky, don’t really eat fruits or vegetables often, and find myself turning to sugar in times of stress or boredom.  What can I say?  I just love sweet things.

So how dependent am I on this sweet substance?  No idea, but I figure it would be interesting to find out and document it along the way.  My goal is to bring you with me as I walk down the road of no processed sugar or flour.  Oh, and I’m perfectly fine if you think I’m crazy or will fail horribly, even though I feel quite sane and will give it my best shot.
I put together some quick ground rules for myself since I know there are so many variations of what I will be attempting.

Here’s a few:
  • No processed sugars or flour, which includes all the enriched, bleached, corn syrup type stuff.
  • Stick to foods with single (or very minimal) ingredients.  Fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, eggs, etc.
  • Try to avoid some of the fruits and veggies that are a bit higher in starches and natural sugars, within reason.  I’ll avoid potatoes and corn, but will have a difficult time saying no to a banana because it’s one of the three fruits I enjoy.
  • Drink a minimum of 100 ounces water a day.  This is less than I should be drinking, but much more than my current average.

I’m sure there’s other things, but that’s all I can think of for right now.  Either way, I’ll be documenting my experiences for your entertainment, so stay tuned to this blog.  I’m open to your thoughts, criticisms, advice, and comments.

All the best!

Good luck John! Regarding the water intake, the main thing to keep in mind is this (from the Mayo clinic article on adequate water intake) "Generally, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow — and measures about 6.3 cups (1.5 liters) or more a day if you were to keep track — your fluid intake is probably adequate."
I suspect 100 ounces is going to be a real stretch goal for you seeing as how I generally only hit ~50 a day and water is almost all I drink. So please keep the end goal of what adequate hydration looks like in mind as you do this.
