Resolutions are upon us!  Do something different this time.

Hello friends,

The fateful day is quickly approaching.
The New Year is looming and once again you’re pondering what resolutions will help you survive another 365 days.  If you’re like me, (and a few million other Americans’), then somewhere on your list will be something about eating healthier, losing weight, drinking more water, participating in a physical activity, or possibly a combination of all those things.  Unfortunately, once you commit these resolutions to paper, you might get a feeling of Déjà vu as you look over the list.

Let’s face it, you’ve been here before and likely are dusting off the same plan to be “healthier” this year that you wrote up a decade ago and have been rehashing ever since.  The question becomes, how do you shake things up?  How can you make this year different and do something that will have a lasting effect on your mind and body, which will help you for the entire year and beyond?
I want you to join me over the next two months as I prepare and then take on a month-long challenge of giving up sugar and flour.  Let me give you the material I will use, the insights I’ve learned, and the support you can get by a bunch of folks doing the same thing at the same time.  Here’s the best part, I’m not going to push some crazy diet fad, gym membership, prepackaged meal plan, or supplements on you because you don’t need it to be successful.  I just need you to be open minded and know that you’re capable of taking on this unique challenge.

So who am I and what credentials do I have to ask you for this life changing month?  Honestly, I’m just a guy who took this challenge early last year and it so profoundly affected me that I want to share it with you.  I’m not a dietician, exercise guru, or life-coach that can dazzle you with a bunch of buzzwords, but I can honestly tell you about my experiences and give you some straight talk on what to expect and need to do to be successful.  I can promise you that doing the challenge 100% for one month will positively affect your life in a variety of ways.

Here’s a quick outline of what to expect over the next two months.

  1. January 1st – You made those resolutions, so get your mindset in the right place to be healthier by eating better and getting a bit more exercise.  Go ahead and get started with that while we do a worksheet on our emotional and physical inventory.
  2. January week 1 – We’ll go through some worksheets on prepping our houses for the no sugar and no flour challenge starting February 1st.  Your cupboards should already be moving in a healthy direction because of your recent resolution.
  3. January week 2 – We’ll get our meal plans in order for the first couple of weeks, which will help us define some shopping lists.  We’ll start to let our cupboards dwindle of the processed foods, the flour laden delicacy’s, and items with hidden sugars.
  4. January week 3 – We’ll do some soul searching on what we want to accomplish from this “test of will-power” that we’ll be undertaking.
  5. January week 4 – It will be our final house prep and meal planning time.  We’ll get the grocery list ready for the first big no sugar and no flour grocery trip.  We’ll also start to tell others that we are trying a “crazy one month experiment” so they can marvel at our fortitude and will power.
  6. February 1st – We begin.

I’ll be here with you as we go along, sharing my experiences at each step.
I hope you’ll share your thoughts, fears, and recipes along the way too.  You can use the comment section of the blog or the Facebook page for the challenge to share your thoughts with myself and others.

All the best!
John Graham

New Year's Resolutions

2016 is finishing up and if you’re like most people, you are thinking about how to make the New Year something special.  Sure in year’s past you’ve made some resolutions and maybe they had a minor impact on your life, but there’s a chance you want to try something this time that will really change you.

Earlier this year I made a resolution to test my will power for a month and discover more about my mindset by giving up sugar and flour.  Little did I know that this short-term experiment would lead to such a profound change in my life?   Giving up sugar and flour for the month of March really opened my eyes to the food we eat and world we live in.

Now, before you chalk me up as crazy or that giving up sugar and flour is impossible for you, please keep in mind that I didn’t do anything that you couldn’t do.  Sure it was tough, but it definitely wasn’t impossible and the results were well worth the challenge.  After one month, the change in my body and mind was so drastic that I wanted to continue.

The hardest part of this whole experiment is trying to help people understand the following things:
1.       Anyone can accomplish this challenge with the right mindset and tools.
2.       Giving this challenge 100% will profoundly affect you in ways you can’t imagine.
3.       Going without sugar actually becomes easier the longer you do it.
4.       People can survive without processed foods for a month.
5.       There is no risk involved physically or financially.

There are so many positives to come out of this experiment for you, but the world has programmed you to believe that you simply can’t live without sugar and flour.
To me though, I feel like you can accomplish anything for a month.  In an average lifetime, a person has 780 months to spend however they’d like and I’m just asking you to give up a couple of things for one of them.  I promise that if you feel no difference after that one month and think that I’m just crazy, then I won’t judge you for how you live the other 779 months.  Just imagine though, if the experiment works and you feel better, healthier, and think clearer than you ever have before.  Won’t that be worth the test?
